I recently finished an incredible book called Find a Way by Diana Nyad. It's the story of one woman's life-long dream to swim across the Atlantic Ocean from Cuba to Florida, and without a doubt one of the most inspirational stories I've ever read. No one had ever successfully swam the stretch of water she set out to swim, and even more astounding, she accomplished it at the age of 64! She overcame so many obstacles and setbacks on her journey, but somehow she found a way to accomplish her dream.

Today my challenge is this... Find a way to do that thing you've always dreamt of doing. Maybe you can't accomplish your dreams and goals in one day, but take action toward them today. Recommit, believe in yourself, FIND A WAY and don't stop until you succeed. 

(And on a side note... If you enjoy reading, I HIGHLY recommend this book! It will reignite your fire toward accomplishing your own goals and dreams. I can't tell you how many times since reading this I've thought to myself, "If she can swim across the ocean at 64 years old, I can at least finish my workout or get through this boring thing I'm not wanting to do." It's a great perspective changer!)

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to go camping with my family and friends. As soon as we pulled into camp, signals went dead, and for 4 days I had very limited cell or wifi signal. 

The kids took a break from their electronics too... AND had a blast!

I’m not going to lie… At first I felt completely lost without the ability to even make or receive a phone call. What if there was an emergency? What if someone needs something? What if I’m missing out on something important? But something very liberating started to happen. I was fully present. I had no distraction to turn to in a moment of boredom. I was engaged in the moment. I noticed the birds chirping when I woke up in the morning. I rode bikes with my kids. I just enjoyed the day without thinking about my to-do list or making sure I got photos of every detail of my day to post on facebook.

I realized very quickly just how much I needed to take a digital detox every once in awhile. We all know the benefits of being able to stay connected, but I think we’ve become so addicted to always being plugged-in that sometimes we forget to just ‘stop and smell the roses’. We forget that we look at life just a little differently when we aren’t looking through the lens of our camera phone. We enjoy the moment knowing we’ll never have that exact moment again.

Today my challenge is this: either today or one day in the next week, take a day to disconnect from the digital world. I know this isn’t easy or even feasible to do during the work week for certain people, so if it doesn’t work for you to do this today, take a day over the weekend to do it.

I don't know about you, but if you're anything like me sometimes you aren't perfect! Sometimes you're human. Last week was one of those dreaded weeks for me. I was less than my best, and I let some negative experiences with one of my kids get the best of me.

In the past I would have wallowed in my self-condemnation for several days wondering what my problem is, or why I can't seem to stop moments like these from occurring in the first place, but part of living YOUR BEST LIFE is LOVING YOURSELF through those ugly moments. I wallowed in it for about a day, but my rebound was much quicker than normal.

I think we all have little things we need to give ourselves a break on sometimes. Maybe you ate the cookie even though you told yourself you wouldn't. Maybe you were trying to be more present with your kids, but you were too tired at the end of the day. Maybe you told yourself you were going to workout today, but then got distracted by other pressing issues (or maybe you just didn't feel like it). That's ok... Life goes on. I

t's important though to stop the negative self-talk that usually comes along side those moments - thoughts like, "I never follow through," or "I'm always going to be fat," or "Why bother? I knew I wouldn't get it done." All these thoughts say to our subconscious mind is, "I'm not good enough."  But, I'm here today to tell you, YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH! By simply striving, by walking the path, no matter how imperfect it may sometimes seem, YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH! 

So today, cut yourself a little slack. Be ok with all your imperfect moments. Forgive yourself if you veered slightly off your path. Try again tomorrow, but LOVE YOURSELF TODAY! 

 

 

 

Go Consumer-LESS

Today's Challenge - Stop consuming

We live in a world of consumerism. Did you know that annually Americans spend more on shoes, jewelry and watches ($100 billion) than we do on higher education? Or that the average person will spend 3,680 hours (153 days, or 5 months) of their lives looking for misplaced items? 

The worst part about these staggering statistics is that studies have shown that none of this "stuff" is making us any happier. We buy just to buy or for the "high" of it. I've been guilty of this over and over thinking, "Oh, it's such a good deal. I better get it just in case," or "This (gag gift) will be so funny to give," or "My kids will be so happy if I buy them this toy." 

Unfortunately, the thrill of the hunt only lasts momentarily, and what we are then left with is a boat load of junk, filling up our houses, bogging down our minds. What do we do with all this junk? Well, one in ten Americans rents a storage unit outside of their home. Many of us just keep letting it fill our homes. Did you know there are over 300,000 items in an average American home and that each year the average American throws away 65 pounds (29 kg) of clothing.

Today, my challenge is to become a non-consumer. Just for one day don't buy ANYTHING. Eat only what you need to for fuel. Don't stop at the coffee shop. Make it at home if you can. If it makes more sense for you to eat out because of work or activities that's fine, but set the intention for the day to be more of a PRODUCER and less of a CONSUMER. 

Notice how you feel at the end of the day. Did you feel deprived? Did you feel happier? More in control of your thoughts and feelings?

Take a personality profile assessment

Today's Challenge - Take a personality assessment

One of the most valuable resources we have and can learn more about is that lovely face starring back at you in the mirror each morning. What makes you tick? What are your biggest strengths? Weaknesses? What are your guiding personality traits? Are you an introvert or an extrovert? 

By learning about our guiding characteristics and personality traits we can better understand how we relate to others, where our greatest chances to thrive are and so much more! 

DISC assessment

For example, when I recently took the Clifton StrengthsFinder Assessment, I discovered that my top 5 themes are:

1. Connectedness

2. Individualization

3. Ideation

4. Futuristic

5. Strategic 

What does all of this mean? Well, when you purchase a test, you'll get a comprehensive report outlining exactly what your top 5 themes are and how to utilize that information in your daily life. I found my report very intriguing, and I've been able to go to my action items for sound guidance for living my best life! 

Another great test, and one that doesn't cost anything thanks to the guru himself, Tony Robbins, is the DISC Profile. Dr. William Marston, the psychologist who proposed the DISC Model of Behavior, argued that behavioral expression of emotions could be categorized into 4 main categories:  Dominance (D), Inducement (I), Submission (S), and Compliance (C).

Since his book, Emotions of Normal People in 1928, the DISC assessment has become a cornerstone for businesses and individuals seeking to understand their own emotions and their ability to relate to others in context of their emotional behavior. 

One of my personal favorite tests, and one (a limited version) that is also free is the Myers Briggs Personality Test. This test, based on Carl Jung’s and Isabel Briggs Myers’ personality type theory, will give you a 4 letter formula that will provide you tons of insight into what your strengths and weaknesses are, what careers would be best for you, how to communicate with other types and so much more. 

For example, I am an ENFP which means: 

  • I have slight preference of Extraversion over Introversion (12%)
  • I have moderate preference of Intuition over Sensing (47%)
  • I have moderate preference of Feeling over Thinking (50%)
  • I have slight preference of Perceiving over Judging (22%)

From there I was able to learn all about what makes me uniquely me. And I have to say... the report was pretty spot on! 

So, today, gain a little insight into your own best asset, YOU! Choose one of the three tests outlined above. The Myers Briggs Test, provided by Human Metrics, is probably the one I would recommend for someone who wants a free, thorough but quick, option.

Go on a walk

Today's Challenge - Go on a walk

Walk

There are so many great health benefits when we exercise, and even a short, brisk walk can provide some pretty amazing ones. First, walking can significantly boost your mood, especially if you choose to hit the pavement and get outside vs. walking indoors on a treadmill. Walking also helps strengthen your heart, tap into your creativity and tone and strengthen your muscles. Several studies also show a decreased risk for disease and dementia. Even better, if you go on a walk with a friend or your partner, studies have found it can help you feel more connected. 

Personally, the benefit I enjoy the most is the profound impact it has on my mood when I go for a mid-day walk. It's a nice pause to an otherwise sometimes hectic day. I always come back feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle the rest of my daily tasks. And despite how great I know it makes me feel, there are still days that I don't make it a priority. 

So, today's challenge is to get outside and go for a walk. You can choose whether you want to walk for 10 minutes or an hour. Just get outside and do it!

Did you know that since 1978 the average number of non-book-readers has more than tripled? What's even more staggering is that number is across all mediums including audio books. With the rise of the internet and "reality television" people are reading less than ever before. 

The problem is that reading is so crucial for our growth. Whether you listen to an audio book, read informative articles, or read from a kindle or tablet, there are so many wonderful ways to enjoy learning and growing. 

My challenge to you today is to start reading. If you can, find yourself a book and spend 15-30 minutes recharging your batteries while enjoying a little reading time. If you don't want to make that kind of commitment, look for some interesting articles that you could read. 

If you have never read The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho I highly recommend it! It is super easy to ready, and a great story with so many wonderful lessons.

Today's Challenge - Create a new habit

My habit for the next 21 days is to exercise for 30 minutes everyday! What's yours?

What's something you've been needing to change in your life? Researchers argue that it takes anywhere from 21 to 66 days to create a new habit (or break a bad one). I tend to think 66 sounds more realistic if you really want the habit to stick long term, but for the sake of this challenge sounding more doable, we'll stick to 21 days. 

So, what could you commit to working on for just 21 days? What action could you take that would add up to the most significant positive change in your life? Maybe you're like me and it's something health related like, "I am going to exercise for at least 20 minutes everyday for 21 days," or maybe it's financial, "I'm going to save all the money I would normally spend eating out and make meals at home for 21 days." Whatever the case may be, choose something that will have a positive impact on you personally. 

This TAKE.ACTION.TODAY challenge is a much bigger commitment than some of the previous ones, primarily because I'm asking you to commit for 21 days. I'll check in with you along the way, but today make a commitment to what you'll be working on for the next 21 days.

Today's Challenge - Do something nice for the one/ones you love.

If you're in a romantic relationship it can be so easy to forget to show love and appreciation for your significant other. You get caught up in the busyness and stress of life, and without even realizing it, sometimes start taking the relationship for granted just a little bit. 

Tony Robbins has a quote I absolutely love about marriage. He say, "If you do what you did in the beginning of a relationship, the relationship will never end." 

So simple, yet so true. If we give the same way we did when we met our spouse and felt so in love and happy, we'll continue to feel those same feelings - we'll be in love and happy. 

So today, if you have a significant other, shower them with a little extra love. Do something unexpected. If you don't have a significant other, choose someone else you love. It could be a parent, a child, a friend, whoever you think could use a little extra love and happiness.

Today's Challenge - Write a list of 10 things you are grateful for. 

The single most transformative thing I have ever done in my life is taking the time to write down things I am grateful for every day. When I skip this it shows. Gratitude is one of the fastest ways to transform our lives. Gratitude is the antidote for fear, lack and even depression. 

Look at what these thought leaders say about gratitude:

  • "He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has." Epictetus

So today, write down a list of 10 things you are most grateful for. Then think about why you are grateful for them. As Rhonda Byrne teaches in The Magic they power isn't in what you are grateful for, but why you are grateful for it. The power is in the feelings and meaning you give to things.

    Today's Challenge - Connect

    Who do you need to connect with today? Next to food and shelter, our need to connect with one another is one of the most important human needs we can fulfill. We're literally hard wired to crave and desire connection with others. 

    According to an article on Psychology Today social connections increase longevity, strengthen our immune systems and lower anxiety and depression. 

    With the technology we have today - the ability to connect through social media - you'd think we'd be more connected than ever, but unfortunately, science is now showing quite the opposite. While we are connected to a greater number of people through social media, the connections aren't as deep or meaningful. 

    Think about it for yourself. How many of your "friends" on social media do you feel really close and connected to? How many would you trust and feel able to share your most intimate problems and secrets with? How many of them would be there for you in a bind? How many of them would really get excited and celebrate your greatest accomplishments and wins? 

    Connection is truly about quality and not quantity. Social media is great in many ways, but deep, meaningful connection is better left to personally connecting with the people we care about. 

    Last night I got together with 3 girlfriends and we went on a run together. We'd been wanting to get together anyway, so it was the perfect way to connect while also taking care of our health. I had a ton of other things to get done, but I'm so glad I forced myself to take the time to really enjoy and connect with my friends. I always feel a sense of renewal and support when I do. 

    So, today pick up the phone and call that person you've been wanting to connect with. Take the time to have a real conversation, or go take some flowers to a friend just because. I'd love for you to share what you are going to do to connect with the people who are important to you!

    Today's Challenge - Get out of your routine! 

    Sometimes we get so caught up in the monotony of our daily routine that we forget that life is meant to be enjoyed! Robin Sharma said it best, "You can't live the same day for 75 years, and call it a life."

    When was the last time you did something spontaneous? Tried something that scared you? Took a class on something new? Read a book? 

    I've been on vacation for the past week in beautiful, sunny California, and I can't even describe the positive effects it has had on my mood. It's been a wonderful time for my family, and we've been making some incredible memories. 

    I love this spoken word poem. It's moving message serves as  inspiration to get out there and live life to the fullest! 

    Don't let life pass you by without living it. Don't get to the end of your life with regrets! Live the life you dream of.

    Today, get out of your routine! Do something you've been wanting to do. Make time for the people you love. Go on a HOT DATE with your spouse. Just live it up whatever you do!

    When was the last time you did something for you? Did you feel guilty about it? It's so easy to get caught up in the demands of taking care of everyone else that we sometimes forget that it's ok to take care of ourselves too! 

    Maybe you should go get a relaxing massage, or go get those toes done for spring. Maybe treat yourself to a nice meal, or go do something fun you've really been wanting to do. It could even be as simple as going for a nice walk and grabbing yourself a cup of coffee. Sometimes my treat, as simple as it is, is a nice hot bath with music and candles. It just puts me in my happy place! 

    So, today, just do something for yourself without any guilt! 

     

    SPEND TIME IN NATURE

    Today's Challenge - Spend some time in nature.

    I don't know about the rest of the world, but here in Oregon it feels like the sun is shining for the first time in MONTHS! This winter was LONG and DREARY, so on this first day of spring, with the sun shining and birds chirping I'm reminded to get outside and ENJOY the BEAUTY OF NATURE. 

    According to an article in the Huffington Post going outside and enjoying nature can spur weight loss, improve brain function and significantly amp up Vitamin D intake. It also brings down stress levels and makes us feel happier. 

    Today, get outside and enjoy a few minutes in nature! Maybe just go for a 15 minute walk, or do some spring garden prep. Feel the freshness in the air and soak in the beauty around you!

    Today's Challenge - Take a Cold Shower

    Why on Earth would we encourage you to do such a thing? Well, as crazy as it may be, finishing your shower with a cold shot has MANY HEALTH BENEFITS. 

    Personally, I started doing this about 2 months ago, and the results are amazing! Science has shown that taking a cold shower increases alertness (shocking I know), but did you also know that cold showers increase happiness hormones, circulation, and immunity. Cold showers also increase your body's ability to burn fat, and create more beautiful hair and skin. THERE ARE SO MANY AMAZING BENEFITS. 

    If you want more science... check out this great article that dives deep into the science behind it. Either way, this is one of those LIFE-HACKS you just HAVE TO TRY! 

    Today, when you take your shower turn the water as cold as it will go for the last 60 seconds. Breathe through the shock, and prepare yourself for some seriously great results. My recommendation is to try to do this consistently for a month. You'll find your body will start craving it and you'll actually start to look forward to your cold shower!  

     

    Clean Somthing You've Been Putting Off

    Take 10 minutes out of your day to clean one item that you may have been avoiding or just haven't got around too. It could be finally getting all the garbage out of your car, cleaning your dusty celling fan, or just a quick scrub to your toilet. If you were to take just 10 minutes out of each day to clean something small it would help make the days you set aside for cleaning much easier.

    Today's Challenge - Meditate

    Meditation is one of the easiest ways to start creating our BEST LIFE DAILY. While it can seem daunting to begin the practice, the benefits are AMAZING! 

    I started meditating fairly regularly about 5 months ago, and I've found myself having better clarity and vision for my life, as well as feeling an overwhelming sense of peace throughout the day. On the days I don't remember my practice I definitely feel it!

    So, how do you get started if you aren't a buddhist monk? My advice is aim small, and start with a guided meditation. The first time I meditated I only lasted for 5 minutes. Now I can easily meditate for 30. 

    There are tons of great free guided meditations on youtube. Here are some of my favorites:

    Guided Morning Meditation (10 minutes to kick start your day) 

    GUIDED MEDITATION for Healing, Energy & Enlightenment

    There are also some great apps that teach you how to meditate. One of my favorites is Headspace. They offer a free 10 day trial with 10 minutes sessions each day that build upon one another. 

    Or if you just want an easy cheat sheet with some simple breathing techniques you can try for a mid-day pick me up, I've created a beautiful guide that highlights 5 breathing exercises

    Today, try meditating using one of these guided meditation, or any method you wish. Get centered in the present and feel the amazing benefits of being completely immersed in the moment.

Commitment is both power and purpose. Every moment in our life that makes us feel proud or accomplished involves commitment. Once we do it, it influences our behaviors and actions. Unlike hope, it forces us to face challenges when obstacles arrive and forces us to find success because we aren't allowed to quit! Success in most things in life requires extreme commitment. Here at YOUR BEST LIFE DAILY, to live our best life we are required to commit to our daily practices that make us better! Whether it is practicing mindfulness, meditation, gratitude, exercising or nutrition- they all require commitment! Today we want you to first decide what you want to commit to.     Today's challenge is to make a homemade, FRESH meal! In today's world it is so easy to just pick up fast food on the way home after a long day at work. We are challenging you to take care of your mind, body and soul by cooking something at home.

    If you need some recipe inspiration check out our Body Blog. Whether you make your breakfast, lunch or dinner we want you to try to create something using lots of fresh ingredients and eliminating the processed B.S.!!

    If you have kids, we recommend getting them involved too. Usually when children help in creating something, they feel more motivated to eat it.

    While you are cooking and eating, try to stay aware of how you feel during the process, or how you feel after. Do you feel accomplished? Energized? Clean?

    Todays Challenge - Live in the moment

    It can be very difficult to live in the moment for some people, myself included, so today try to LIVE IN THE MOMENT. Yes, you are working on achieving your best life daily but sometimes we get caught up in trying to improve ourselves so much we forget to live a little.

    So today if someone asks you to do something fun that might disrupt your schedule, do it. Sometimes living in the moment is all you need.  #LIVEALITTLE
